College football scores, rankings, highlights: Oregon and Oklahoma survive unexpected fears

0

The Oregon No.3 and Oklahoma No.4 both endured tough tests at home against unranked conference opponents on Saturday night, but managed to escape with wins in a day full of upheavals and tight calls for classified teams. Oregon beat Arizona 41-19, but only after the Wildcats moved closer to 24-19 at the end of the third quarter. Timely interceptions helped the Ducks move to 4-0 as they knocked out Arizona quarterback Jordan McCloud five times. Two of the interceptions came in the red zone, and another was returned for a Bennett Williams touchdown in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.

Earlier in the evening, kicker Gabe Brkic broke through a 30-yard field goal at the end of the allotted time to take the Sooners to 4-0 with a 16-13 victory over a West Virginia team that allowed the QB Spencer Rattler and Co. to hold out through the night with a stingy defense. When it mattered most, however, Rattler designed a 72-yard drive to set up the winning kick, redeeming an otherwise underwhelming performance for the second year in the red shirt.

The close games for Oklahoma and Oregon have shown just how few truly elite teams there appear to be at this point in the season. They were fortunate enough to avoid the same fate as other top 10 teams like Texas A&M No.7 and Clemson No.9, both of whom suffered losses on Saturday as chaos enveloped the sport for much. of the day.
